If this was actual combat, the tank would not have tried to take out the Land Rover with the turret, instead the .50 calibre gun ontop of the turret would have turned the Land Rover into scrap metal in seconds.

No, the M1A1 has a smoothbore cannon. The rounds have stabilizing fins though, so they are incredibly accurate.
The M1 had rifling, but rifling slows the round down which isn't nice on a kinetic-kill like the Sabot.
