I want to install a new hard drive into my computer and install a fresh windows on it, but i want to transfer all the old files to the new one. Can i just set the old hard drive (including the old OS on it) as primary slave and copy all my files to the new hard drive, without any trouble? I mean, don't you have double C: drives then (from the new and the old hard drive)? After all, both hard drives are formatted into C: drives.

Would you do the same for an IDE because my hard drive has an IDE on it.

I did not know it made a difference which cable connector went into the master drive. I used the slave connector to connect my masterdrive and the master connector to connect my slavedrive.. I set the jumpers correctly and the computer works fine... should I change the cable around?

ata=former name of ide/pata before sata came out ide has a wide ugly ribbon cable..... sata=serial ata is going to be quite a bit shorter than a ide drive, much faster because it has serial data transfer instead of parallel data transfer and the cable from the drive to the motherboard is much smaller and circular instead of flat and the connector on it is going to look sort of like this: [-]>....lol
ieatlinux (August 12, 2008 at 10:06 am)
yeah, sata is better because it has a higher transfer rate.
