They did. After. These were the first G5 towers. Once the G5 XServe came out the University traded the towers back in to Apple for the rack-mounts. Apple refurbished the towers, and MacMall sold them to the public. I have one.

I think there is a card which you can buy when you get a mac tower which allows ultra fast data transfer.
