I was speaking of movies, not television, but most pop musical performances on TV from the 1960s through the '80s were also lip-synched. Musical acts did perform live on late-night talk shows like Johnny Carson's Tonight Show and variety shows like Ed Sullivan, although frequently only the lead singer would be live and the backing track would be pre-recorded.
