Yes that might be smarter but its a movie Zeitgeist28! And movies dwell on silly things people would normally realise but this tiny thing gives the movie quality!

well..Wouldn't the WALL-A (Waste Allocation Load Lifter - Axiom Class) be better for earth then for the Axiom? :D You know, those BIG ASS Walle's on the spacehip...
I mean the earth is covered with junk, what could such a tiny robot like wall'e really do? :D
