live view is like compact digital camera,compose the shot at looking at the LCD screen,not the optical view finder.

I'm looking for my first dSLR is this a good one to start with because I was looking at the Canon and Nikon D60 as well

i'd go with the Canon 450D if you don't need great Live view or if money matters
if live view is a neccessity then go with the A350
if money isnt a problem and you want quality I'd go with the NIKON D90. Excellent picture quality and it can shoot HD 720P movies for up to 5 minutes.
