You are right high level bombers almost never hit ships at sea.

Coldheat it is well known that the Bismarck was scutted its part of the standard abandon ship procedure for german warships,at least 3 of the survivors fired charges from 10am the last torpedo struck at 10.25 the ship sunk at 10.39,I doubt that the cruiser torpedoes caused that degree of flooding as Bismarck was low in the water they prob hit far up the sides the last hit the deck!

All the German aa guns can depress 10deg(105MM,TWIN 37MM,SINGLE 20MM)as i have said before these are not the superb guns used by the German army, the twin 37mm was designed in the late 1920,s when almost every airforce in the world used biplanes,in 1940 the RN could not have found Bismarck but by 1941 codes were broken radar and hf/ df finders fitted raiders become findable, all the German supply ships were found and sunk by late 1941.

German warship aa was nothing like there army aa,rn and usn systems were superior, the twin 37mm krupp gun was hand loaded and aimed with mk1 eye ball, rate of fire 60rpm,rn gun 8 barrel 2pdr pom pom, auto loaded 120 round belt,600rpm opticaly and radar directed.

Well i doubt that. The british made several attack at the stationary tirpitz with submarines and bombers and only an immense huge bomb finally destroyed that ship. I personally doubt, that this would have worked with a moving ship. You don´t send heavy bombers to attack ships.
CoIdHeat (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
I don´t know if i get you but wasn´t the bismarck coming from norway and trying to breakthrough into the atlantic? It would have been an enormeous effort for the whole Royal Navy to search a single ship in the whole atlantic while the bismarck had no problems, dealing with merchant ships. The obsolete AA was just provisorical and should have been replaced against modern AA at Brest while the old fashioned swordfish flew to low to be aimed at with heavy AA.
CoIdHeat (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
He was talking about speed and outsail. Of course no ship can escape an airplane so why do you mention the AA´s which were just provisorical? I guess WW2 made it obvious, that german engineering was superior to most of their allied or soviet counterparts. Just compare submarines, tanks, planes, infantry weapons and so on.

Whats so special about a destroyer 1on1? About Samar: You had 6 escort carriers and lost 2 + a couple of dds and destroyed 3 cruiser, 1 destroyer and damaged some. Mhh... that was shurely an interesting fight against heavy odds and you managed to make them retreat but if you look at the losses, i dont know if that´s a clear victory. Your statement is idiotic, because its only speculations. Of course we never faced kamikaze planes, but we used kamikaze on our own.
CoIdHeat (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Well you have to differ the two attacks from narvik. In the first one, destroyer vs destroyer, both sides lost only 2 DD´s. The brits started a second attack with 9 destroyers against 8 german DD´s, 4 of them damaged from the first battle and the brits had a battleship. Of course, destroyers are no match against a battleship. What did you expected? I was referring to the following land battle where survivors fought of 25.000 marines and hey.. we were talking about courage, not success.

Uss Houston CL 81 a light cruiser took 2 jap torpedos in her stern and did not sink she has the record for taking on the most water and not sinking. Testimony to America having the best built ships and the most well trained sailors in WW2
