In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed — they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.

"We could never learn to be brave and patient, if there were only joy in the world."- Quote from Hellen Kellar...Might shed some more light on the necessity of evil...

I don't know. But I would say yes. Bad weather isn't enough...If you get my drift. Not just weather. But all those other non human perfections. They don't add up to enough dark. So maybe human evil is necessary. Though I do wish it wasn't.

The question is, is human evil necessary? Or just the general imperfections and difficulties of the world?

I don't know. But it is the best argument. I don't think good breeds stupidity or naivety. But there needs to be good and evil to make advancement though. You need to feel the darkness and pain of just how bad things can be in order to WANT to make a difference. If things are good than what is there to change. Or if everything seems perfect than what could you change. I don't know. But I do believe that evil and good are both necissary for society and mankind. For day their must be night.

Is evil actually necessary for advancement? That is certainly what Harry argues, but I don't know that he is correct. I don't want to believe that "good" breeds weakness and naivety. But it makes you think, doesn't it?

I wonder where Graham Greene nicked this from?

It's remarkable to look at this and then look at Touch of Evil. You can't help but feel bad for Welles, since he got so big.

A wonderful critique of realpolitik in all its callousness and evil.
