Yeah i think they didn't wipe their minds. Not sure if it's canon to the movies, but it was part of the graphic novel that they woke up to find themselves these... machines. One minute human, the next not. That's got to push you off the edge. Main reason Cain (i think i got the guys name right) was left conscious in his tank when his brain was removed, so he was always aware of being changed from human to machine. Gradual process so he got used to it all.

Murphy accepted the Robocop program primarily because they blanked his mind, and his sense of duty to the law, he's like Judge Dredd in that respect. The prototype Robocops were probably not mindwiped, and as a result of finding out what they've become, go apeshit.
