that's not the case in sweden/stockholm almost everyone uses public transportation in their regular everyday life :)

well, it's a difference of cultures.
public transportation are regarded as "only for guys without a car" or as dangarous in the west,
but in fact in Japan, its seen as the fastest, cheapest and the most efficient means of transport in cities.
we take it for granted that trains are crowded especially in downtown.

If you live at suburban Tokyo and miss the so-called EXPRESS train that only stops at certain major stations, you would spend way more time going home (a Japanese subway line is incredibly long). And that's why passengers strive to get on this train.
