Well, you are right about the Insanity comment.
However had it now been for the sheer numbers simplicity of Sherman tanks, the Panzer tank was a far superior machine.
That being said, because it was over-built it took longer to build, and even longer to repair. So as a result, it's over-engineering was a liability in the battlefield and it cost them dearly.

the nazis didn't lose WWII because of over-engineerig but because hitler was an insane bastard.
what you call german over-engineering is just the effect of globalization, german firms try to keep up with the low prices that the product flood from the third world brings with it.
the quality of the products decreases what has to be balanced with more technical effort and working hours - paid by the customer.
"Made in Germany" has almost lost it's meaning.

German Over-engineering is what killed the Panzer tank, and lost germany the second world war (thank god).
German over-engineering=big headache when things break.
Case in point, ask a BMW motorcycle mechanic what he thinks about final drive failures.

I've owned three BMW's, one VW.
German overbuilding comes with it's own issues.
Super expensive replacement parts,
(which many of them are now made in China and in Mexico).
Sure this is a spiffy car,
but for the money I'd rather buy an airplane. You can go faster and not have to deal with urban tax collectors.
I am pretty sure this car won't be selling as quickly now that the worldwide stock market is in a mess. Maybe some rich Arab prince will buy one.
