He actually does one of the character's voices in an episode of Metalocalypse... but i forgot which episode. Jeff Loomis has also actually done a voice-over as well, and James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett (both of Metallica) have done voices in Metalocalypse.

Well in my opinion these melodic guitar-driven bands have a certain beauty to their music that adding a synth takes away. Look at what happened to Opeth, for example.
