Understanding the essence of Detroit Techno is a matter of apprehending the tension, the urge, the nostalgic mood, the quest for future (what could it be or we SHOULD it be compared to the present and past)... Talking about BPM or technical stuffs is non-sense... just feel the music and remember : 'You don't make a record for fun man'

Jinx is right there was no label called Techno when this came out. Derrick May has a video on here some where that explains it all. He was inspired by Chicago DJ's because he used to take trips to Chicago in the 80's because he has family that live here. Techno is actually a bastard child to Acid House music and House Tracks. Just like House music is a bastard child to Disco and Electronic.

"Many of the early techno tracks had futuristic or robotic themes, although a notable exception to this trend was a single by Derrick May under his pseudonym Rhythim Is Rhythim, called Strings of Life. This vibrant dancefloor anthem was filled with rich synthetic string arrangements and took the underground music scene by storm in May of 1987."

but actually, this ISN'T techno. This is pure Chicago house. This track was first played in Chicago, by house Djs. Yes, this where techno came from, and where it went, but when this came out, there was no such thing as techno....
