It's great to read so much intelligence on a single thread for a change. I want to sleep with you all...

I remember this song from Night of the Demons. Awesome. :)

I'm with you. " a philosophical look at mortality." Any kid would roll eyes at me saying I'm the gothest, or rudest metaler in the room as I sit in my cubicle wearing a tie or lay on the beach sipping pina colada. But it's really a state of mind and a how intensely your sensibility responds to the stimulus what makes you realize how deep you really are into a genre.

I agree with most of what you said and hate to sound like I'm trying to stereotype goth but.. vampire shit is the epiphany of what goth entitles, no? And note that when I talk vampire is not just the iconographic characterizations but at the behavioral traits of the "bloodsucker" and "their victims". I think depression and doom lead 9 out 10 times to "vampire/victim" states.

Of course! Glad you try to break it down in more tangible factors because I'm not so sure we all agree in what Goth exactly means, therefore it seems we end up misleading or badgering one another. These contributions can only be good if we stop assuming people can read our minds or that they would simply agree with everything we say and see things the way we do.

minimalistic bass driven punk music with a nice kick snare beat beneath it
usually the guitar is sparse and mixed a little quieter than the bass and drums are
thematically speaking the vocals are usually dark and often some what tongue and cheek
helpful?

If you need to define Goth, you have already been sucked in by a need to quantify and thus unconsciously degrade. Siouxsie, Diamanda Galas, Bauhaus, all decline the bullshit genre "Goth"...because all are UNIQUE and different from one another. I guess Black Sabbath were the first Goths, then, eh? LOL Yeah, they're goin' on tour with Diamanda. I mean, both wear black.....LOL
This is an intense song with dark, pseudo religious imagery. Just let the band rock you senseless!

Like early Cure; Pornography an before. Joy Division. Diamanda Galas. Nick Cave. No vampire shit, just Dark imagery and metaphors.
...and Bauhaus did it right. Their lyrics are still some of the most intelligent and creatively inspiring words even today. I prefer to think of them as post punk.

IMO, "Goth" has become a caracature of itself. It conjures up the stereotype of white facepaint, red lipstick, and an obsession with vampires.
I can say I ws "goth" as a teenager. No make-up though. The only vampire movie I liked was The Hunger, which in my opinion was a philosophical look at mankinds fear of mortality.
To me, "goth" was more a state of mind. Appreciating music that wasn't afraid to explore the darker side of creativity, and using its' messages to understand my own flaws. |
