That's an excellent point made by the head of CATO: if ethanol is so great, why does it need to be propped up at taxpayer expense? And what a bunch of typical politician responses from Evan Bayh. Vague answers, relativistic justifications for subsidies... How have all of our politicians come to be zombified cheerleaders for the eco-nuts?

This is a point the left and the right agree. Corn ethanol is bad. But he needs to clarify that other sources of ethanol could work.

in the long run ethanol really would not be any better than oil. and it would contribute to global hunger. i say solar powered cars! let's make them!

That is simply not true. Cellulosic ethanol can be made from corn stalks tripling corn yield from an acre of ground. The true ethanol energy balance is positive by 30 to 70 percent. Big Oil gets $5.60 a gallon subsidy, ethanol gets 51 cents a gallon. In a real, true free market, ethanol and methane would rule. Beck and Stossel are in the back pockets of foundations owned by Big Oil. IOW, They lie. Corporations love Paying $4 a gallon for gas and You paying income tax to pay Big Oil $5.60
