Mine dont seem to like going above 700 by much. Any higher and they become unstable due to lack of voltage. Im not going to risk the cards by flashing the bios of them. If you want to heat up the cards Use Furmark. Mine normally never get past 80C playing games (CoD4, Crysis) And the fans arnt on max. With Furmark They got up to 94C with the fans on 100% before I finally shut them down.

....and to be honest, looking at the current prices for a GTX 280, and considering the prices will fall even more soon, I'd gladly invest the small price difference to get a HUGE increase in performance, and better feature/quality. If you don't already have an 8800GT, I'd wait to get the GTX 280 - they rock ! :D

One thing you want to be extra careful is DUST - Over time, you would be surprised at how much dust particle gets trapped inside the fan and on the surrounding base (this will also make it noisier and less effective) You wanna keep that area clean, good o'l compressed air - I would normally not leave a fan at 100 at all times - as to the 8800GT, I think NVIDIA cut some corners in build quality....

my old 7600GT sounded like a jet taking of when i put that on 100%

Well when the card first came out, it was around $300 and sometimes beat the 8800gtx, which was a dual-slot, $500+ card. I used to own an 8800gtx, and while it is nice, the 8800gt is such a bargain.

That's the problem when you have single slot cards ! The reason they keep defaults so low is 1) to reduce noise 2) reduce wear. If you attempt to run your fans at 100% all the time, it won't last - the fan will eventually go bad and make 10 times more noise - These are poor, cheap fans, nothing like the add-ons you would use, so don't run it at over 50% unless you need to.

eVGA is actually best quality 8800GT out there.

Nvidia redid the fan design shortly after this video was made.
