Mario, Yoshi, Wario were all original. and maybe Luigi, he was a pallete swap at first, then again he had proved himself as an individual hero. Waluigi was just a 'hey, why not?' Seriously, i rate Waluigi in Mariokart, he's actually got pretty good handling. other than that, he's got nothing exclusive and almost useless.
