The song is about how he lost his father. Story: Eddie Vedder was a baby when his parents broke up. He was raised to believe his stepdad was his biological dad. After he became a teen (Sometime in those years) he found out. Shortly after, his biological dad died, thats the reason why he wrote this song.

Um, no. It didn't actually happen. That's what it's about, tho. What you didn't mention is that in the second verse, the mother falls for the son and sleeps with him because he resembles his father, and she still loves the father.

this song is about part of his real life, when his mom told him that his dad is not his real dad and the real one died months before and the fact that she hid the truth from him for years till after his real dad passed away!!
