I agree with you. The great ones could say more with the spaces in their music than most could say with a hundred notes. I learned that lesson early on in my own career by listening to people like Miles Basie.Sometimes it takes a lot of courage to just play nothing for a few bars. Miles put it very simply: "If you ain't got nuthin' to play, don't play nuthin'" The strange thing is that audiences sense that respect it; well, at5 least some of them do.

This is sort of a problem with all popular music; the fact that people who can play instruments and perform well often can't write good music and vice versa. Also people who have skills either instrumentally or vocally tend to want to brainlessly show off their skills by playing a ton of notes really fast for no reason
