thanks for the reply. Yes, you are right Chopin's studies are virtuoso stuff, and Ashkenazy is a wonderful interpreter. Perhaps I would have been better to have listened to him while he was originally learning this etude. I do teach a few pupils on piano and am a believer in practising pieces slowly until memory of all the notes kicks in. Only then can such etudes be played as the composer intended. I also admire the skills of Boris Berezowsky, Evgeny Kissin, and Christian Zimmerman, regards D

this is quite possibly the most incredible playing of the peice i have heard. What a gem! I love it for many reasons including 1. the way he adds such an emotional dynamic by taking his foot of the pedal soemtimes 2. the dynamic in tempo and volume, especially towards the end 3. the banging of the left hand- magnificent air of power created 4. technically perfect, not a mistake

i just want to say that idil biret has a more sophisticated touch and more control than ashkenazy even though ashkenazy is more colourful and dynamically interesting

actually, although you are right about studies in general, chopin's were MEANT to be virtuosic and show-offy ;P
