It's the silence that always gets me. It really spooks me, I love this film because it hits notes that are really deep in your psyche, really chilling in a more subtle, creepy way.

I wonder why Hal doesn't just fly away before Dave comes back inside.

Yeah. In the move Frank doesn't die immediately; the pod severs his oxygen line and you can see him briefly struggling to reattatch it.

is that how it happened in the movie? cuz in the book HAL sets of a space pod and hits Frank with it and kills him

it is horrific but A.C. Clarke redeems his scary creation-HAL is actually a victim in the novel "2010"-and HAL never kills Dave-Dave terminates HAL-and Dave goes..who knows where-if you want to feed your technology vs. humans hypothesis-which is very well-founded; -also read "Across The Sea Of Suns"-then of course-anything "Terminator" speaks of a machine civilisation-then there is the horror of horrors-the Matrix-it's just a matter of time baby

A truly classic scene from a masterpiece...HAL sets the bar for what all horror movies have tried to create in defining the perfect boogey-man. Sentient A.I. delivered with that perfect cadence sends chills down my spine like no shark, ghost or mask-wearing chainsaw wielder could ever deliver IMHO.
