Program Summary And Objectives: "Millions of American today receive health care for mental or substance-use problems and illnesses. These conditions are the leading cause of combined disability and death of women and the second highest of men." "Improving the Quality of health Care for Mental and Substance-Use Conditions," Institute of Medicine Report, November 1, 2005; Studies are showing an alarming trend, incidents of mental illness related to drug use are on the rise. It's unclear what came first, did a predisposition to mental illness lead to drug use, or is it the other way around? No matter what, co-occurring disorders are a problem. Especially in the wake of this year's hurricanes and other disasters, mental health and substance abuse professionals need to be poised to provide additional care for those suffering serious mental trauma and who may turn to alcohol and drugs as a result. During this hour-long broadcast, hear from treatment providers about the delicate balance between treating a person's addiction and his or her mental illness. We'll also learn about the stigma attached to mental illness and how coalitions can help fight it. Hear from representatives of the American Psychiatric Association about the group's advocacy of comprehensive and non-discriminatory health insurance coverage of mental illness and substance abuse disorders. Learning Objectives: Define co-occurring disorders; Learn about the difficulty treating co-occurring disorders; Discover solutions to the problems both communities and patients face; See how community-based organizations can help improve the local climate to assist those in recovery from substance use disorders and mental health problems; Panelists: Patricia Ordorica, MD - Associate Chief of Staff, Mental Health Behavioral Sciences Central, James A. Haley Veterans Administration Hospital; Associate Professor Dept. of Psychiatry Behavioral Sciences, University of South Florida College of Medicine; Director Addictive Disorders Department of Psychiatry Behavioral Sciences, Univ. of South Florida College of Medicine. Please go to Yahoo and type in "Horrible Truth About Psychiatric Drugs" to see a research paper exposing these drugs. Also so the search "Documented Proof Psychiatric Drugs Shorten Lifespan". Be sure to include the quotes. You will learn information no psychiatrist will tell you. These drugs destroy fertility and libido and cause impotence and extream disphoria and obesity. The promote suicide and violence not prevent it.

they ask questions and maybe talk to someone that knows you, look at your behaviors and if everything adds up...you (might) have a disorder. It's complicated and sometimes theyre wrong.
murbones (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
what disorder do you think you have?
murbones (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
A brain scan would only show a tumor or a broken blood vessel or something like that, not a disorder. They would talk to you and ask questions like...Why do you think you have this disorder and stuff like that. For every disorder there are standard questions that a doctor would ask. Also they would look at different behaviors and it would help if they could talk to someone that knows you well. Unfortunatly a brain scan wouldnt help in your case. It would be easier if it did. good luck!

reply to smithandgrantfan. Well, if your family wont take you to see a doc (and its probubly not serious at all, but IF ITS BOTHERING YOU it should be taken care of) then you could talk to a school nurse, or a guidance counselor etc etc. good luck buddy!

find a phone number for a doctor and call and make an appointment to see them. The perswon on the phone might ask whats it about and you tell them the truth. Then keep the appt and speak to the doctor about it. If you're scared bring a really close friend or someone that knows or believes you or thinks your crazy! lol. your family is not a doctor.
