Actually I heard the same even from persons who aren't mastering engineers. For ex. google for andi vax and view his video tutorial. So I don't think it's propaganda. Ohter advices for self mastering is to give your ears a 2-3 weeks pause before you do the mastering as a way to "forget" the project and hope for a fresh perspecitve once you master.

WHy doesn't this presenter let him talk?
Really frustrating.

That's just propaganda from the out of work mastering engineers who would like to scare you into believing you need their services.

Yes, perhaps true, even though there have been plenty of cases where the other person gets it wrong.
If you have to do it all yourself after all, then try doing it in different places with different sets of speakers, different rooms, air, general atmosphere, etc. to expand your perspective on the recording.

Roger has always been innovative both in and out of the studio. I got some valuable tips on a whole new way of recording. This including McGuinn having built a compressor in his Rickenbacker years ago continue to amaze me

At first, it's strange hearing an old folkie talk like a young Geek Squadder. However, McGuinn almost singlehandedly created the modern guitar riff when he added a compressor to his electric guitar in 1965. He bought one of the first Moog synthesizers in 1967 (for $6,000), and recorded a high tech song called "Space Oddysey." About 1984, he wrote a song called "Personal Computer." In 1991, he wrote and recorded a song called "Car Phone." He's always been a techie.
