Telecast March 22, 1952 from Carnegie Hall, New York City for the second movement go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... from an interview by Robert Stumpf II with Bob Bloom, who played with Toscanini: I played for him for six years. He yelled at me a lot, but as a father. After awhile I became, from those in the orchestra, possibly closer than anyone else to Toscanini. Away from the podium, he was like a little child. He loved music. In his study, he would show me Puccini's snuff box, Verdi's eye glasses. He treasured these things. One day I was visiting him and he asked me to stay for lunch. I could tell he was very tired, and we had finished our business, so I told him that I didn't have to stay. I said, "Maestro, you look tired. Why don't you take a nap?" He said, "I've been up since five o'clock this morning studying this symphony." The symphony that week was Beethoven's Fifth. I said, "Maestro, how many times have you conducted that?" He answered, "Oh, hundreds." I said, "And you're still studying it?" I loved his answer. He said, "Well, I'm always afraid I may have missed something." This is how he really felt about music.

Ps only an absolute ignorant of music can adfirm that von karajan's interpretation and direction of 5th Simphony " is better" than the head masterpiecing one by Arturo Toscanini , only an absolute ignorant of music , no matter wherevere he's from .....

This is amazing. I'm glad I got into classical music. The sheer emotion and power generated from it is fantastic.

And you did not understand what I said. I didn't like Toscanini's interpretation. Not the symphony itself. I prefer Karajan's.

Though technically sound, imo it's not a very good interpretation (for my taste).

Dear Alex,I agree with you. That is why my review is a 'mixed one' We can do better..and have. But it's definitely got good intensity.Just ignore the phrases...and you'll be fine (~!~)

Why Smith? I think at least it has more emotional undercurrents beneath their metronomic rhythm than the flatness of today's orchestra.

Here is a video of frightening contrasts. On one hand a great conductor desperately trying to (And on some level succeeding) to find the core of the expression. But having saddled himself with a metronomic modernist revisionist idea of Beethoven,he in the end fails. If a digital sampler could play artisitcally it would be this. But we are capable of a more fully dimensioned expression than this. Certainly it has been demonstrated many times already in the history of recording.
