After the first engine in the beginning he gets put into an alternate reality because the engine is the artifact that brings the vortex. The alternate reality plays out but in a very violent way and many lives are effected negatively by Donnie's existence. In order to stop it all he has to be in his room when the artifact hits so that it kills him and none of those lives are effected in such a negative way. That is the VERY brief explanation.

awesome movie ... loved it .... a bit confusing understung it ..cause it's just gives more options to interpret it but really good movie ...it kind of stuck in your mind once you see it ...

The two polar opposites, fear and love... Out of fear, one would have left one's room to avoid being killed by the engine... but he stayed out of love for his family, which is moving because of how mean he had been to the,, it demonstrates that he really DID love them.

That is anyone's guess. It is a very deep movie and many theories can be drawn from it. I doubt there is a specific reason for everything that happens in the movie. I figure that the movie is set up like the Bible, it was made in a way that you can draw your own unique interpretations and thoughts on the events so that you can understand in a way that you can personally identify with.
