the final correct equation is: 2Na(s) + Cl2(g) -- 2NaCl(s) upon mixing the chlorine atom steals an electron from the sodium which makes the chlorine negatively charged and the sodium positively charged the two are then pulled towards each other with great force to form an ionic compound.
