I'm a CCIE, use macs and xserves, Linux and (regrettably) Windaz.
I have many more problems getting Windows systems to behave (due to them breaking many of the IEEE standards out there) but with Xserve and Linux I have no issues.

You're getting more storage for the money because the drives are slower!

lol, your not proving anything. shut up.

1st I love Mac's, I managed 80 at my last job. I'm saying xServe hardware running OS-X with xSAN installed on top isn't a true SAN when compared against dedicated SANs. A true SAN runs on special controllers with an OS dedicated solely to manage the hard drives. The people at Apple know this, when Apple releases a true SAN OS-X and xSAN will become a single OS on specialized controllers. It is awesome to see Apple throw its hat in the ring, I can't wait to see what they come up with.

Not to be rude but are you saying the CNBC isnt a true server setup? Apple has a specalized os for serving called OSX server. its 500 bucks i think.

I'm happy to see Mac's finally getting a piece of the pie back, Jobs has learned from his mistakes. I meant no offense; I've been in IT too long to care what goes into a server room so long as it works. When apple expands their server line offering 2U, 3U, and 4U servers they will get taken more seriously for rack solutions. True SANS use specialized controllers with an OS whose sole purpose is to serve the drives to servers. Servers merely connect to the allocated drive space.

They are. Their estimated market share is about 16%. And not only that, but they are officially the #1 selling company for laptops for education. Dell used to be #1 but Apple has taken that place now. thecreativeone even said that almost everywhere he walks around campus, someone's got a white MacBook or a MacBook Pro. Even the U.S. Arny is using Xserves now. Their server room staff shrank down to about 3 people after getting the Xserves.

That use to be true but after 2000 server rolled out that changed. They have run IIS now for some years, both IIS and Apache have taken their share of exploits. I've managed several significant server rooms between 100 to 400 servers that were 100% Windows and more heterogeneous Linux/Windows servers. I've been in many CoLo data centers, you see mostly HP, Dell, and IBM for servers, and a few X-Serves. I hope to see Apple get more market share, they are kind of cool.

They may outperform the Xserve, but that OS that's on their racks is genuine OS X kitten purring along. Any serious server room has some kind of UNIX based OS running on their servers. Hell, Microsoft doesn't even use their own server OS to run their site.
