they rout the back for maple necks, and use walnut for fill...rosewood fingerboards are a cap, so they rout the front...

When they install the truss rod, they route out the stripe in the back for the truss rod, and fill it in with rosewood, or back in the day; with koa. But nowadays its easier and better to route out the channel under the fingerboard.
