Margaret Dumont is always dramatic in the Marx Brothers films, yet the Marx Brothers are always not taking anything seriously...(And they are usually in postions of power!)

Weikko79 is just being picky. The ELEMENTS of screwball are all OVER the Marx Brothers films. Wikipedia also says you can find screwball qualities in Oscar Wilde and, yes, even Shakespeare. "It Happened One Night" is just a film where it all comes together - "officially," anyway. But you're NOT wrong. Films of the Marx Bros., Max Linder, Chaplin and others were already there, Wikipedia notwithstanding. A director associated with the genre is Leo McCarey; he directed "Duck Soup." |
