You know when you put iron filings on a magnet and they line up to show the shape of the magnetic field? This is kinda the same thing, except that the iron filings are so tiny they are liquid (a "ferrofluid"), and instead of one magnet, theres a whole load of very high-powered magnets in a big ring around this fluid. These magnets can be kind of "tuned" to switch on and off at different speeds (eg, 25 times a sec = 25Hz). The result is the ferrofluid forms these strange shapes. Hope this helps!
