Wrestling for the soul of America. (See the sequel, "NINA SIMONE -REVOLUTION (1969)" also.) I grew up in the South and Midwest during the civil rights years and their aftermath. It challenged everything about my world and changed my perception of life. Not a single day passes where the lessons learned are not effecting my perceptions, my outlook, or my aspirations. What is right now comes from their paths, what is wrong is from where any of us have lost the way. It's on each of us to make it better for each other. Selflessness brings us into the better angels of our nature. This is my psalm of love to my heroes, the bravest of the brave. The PBS series, EYES ON THE PRIZE, has become available again. To me, it is the single greatest and most relevent thing ever shown on television. Check it out and be heartened by the bittersweet struggle for the very soul of America. Peace. I know this song because John Legend did it live at a concert.

Sure, rap music has plenty of downfalls, but when rappers sample (or steal, as some would say), we must search out the original song, as many of us on this page have done, and appreciate it. How many of us who had only HEARD of Nina Simone would have actually looked for THIS particular song if it hadn't been for Lil Wayne?

Lil Wayne brought this song from obscurity for a new generation. There are so few outlets for artists from the past to get their work played in the mainstream, and through hip hop, those geniuses have a new chance to gain more popularity and have their gifts enjoyed and appreciated, again.

This is an absolutely awesome song, of course it doesn't hold a flame to this version, but the Joe Cocker version has a nice Hearty-American flavor to it.
