This is a very particular scene IMHO. One crazy thing about that is that Sheen was not acting at all. He was REALLY stoned and drunk. The breaking of the mirror was not planned and he really got his hand cut. What you see on his hand and on the sheets was his real blood. And when he cries in the end he was really crying, he was not just acting. This is what Coppola says in the documentary about the making of the movie.

actually this is not a movie about vietnam. viet nam is only incidentally the place where the action is. Nor a war movie. This is a remake of heart of darkness. It's what really few people understand about this movie.
