I know wot your sayin but i think he felt theirwas people in their he could empathise with, i.e decent men that just made the wrong decison at the wrong time and payed the price. Rapists and nonces aside of course, always remember theirs 2 sides to most storys

Great song, but I don't understand why Johhny Cash felt so much compassion for the prisoners. Surely San Quentin wasn't the nicest prison in the world, but a prison is never meant to be a hotel. The prisoners were rapists, murderers and other criminals that really didn't deserve any better, IMO.
