He had a 6 foot canopy parachute that opened after 13 seconds to stabilize his fall, then after a further 4 minutes 36 seconds (at 17, 500 feet) his regular 28 foot chute opened.

1. As he came closer to the ground his speed slowed because of increased air pressure.
2. Well, they have the footage from the gondola, so I suppose it eventually landed somewhere.
