Or you can watch the M*A*S*H* Memories special reunion thing, they make a couple of comments about it.
But it is true, he left because of Alan Alda. Though, oddly enough, he left so much a mark while he was there, people asked for his autograph from the actor of BJ. Though they had a similar look. I find that highly amusing, lol.

No. He quit because he was jealous. He couldn't accept that alan alda was the favourite character, and he thought that he always will be in the second place. But he confessed later, that if he had known that the show would last so long, he wouldn't have quit. You can read this on Wayne Rogers IMDB page

IMDb reports (on the McLean Stvenson board) that Stevenson was deathly afraid of Conrad Bain (formerly of the vampire soap Dark Shadows) when the two worked together after Stevenson left Mash!
